My trip to Cyprus... no more.
Yesterday we received a tip from someone about a great deal (with Al Italia) to Cyprus. The details were as follows.... Toronto to Cyprus, Business class ticket, $33USD (regular fares from other carriers ranged from $5000 to $7700). Book online at Orbitz.com (you could have also used Travelocity, Cheaptickets, etc). There were limited dates, so you had to do some searching.
After a while I found some dates and proceeded to book a ticket. Since this was a full "D" (airline code) ticket, it meant I can change the dates, get full refund, etc. at no penalty.
I was issued a confirmation email and subsequent ticket numbers. As far as I'm concerned... we have a deal. I paid them for a trip, they accepted my money, and in return gave me a confirmation with actual ticket numbers.
We told a lot of people about this and just from the people we know here there were over a dozen tickets booked. Not to mention the people they probably told.
Today we find out that they've cancelled all the tickets. No notice either. You have to log into your Orbitz account to actually see that they've been cancelled. Had I never logged in again, booked all my accommodations and showed up at the airport with my confirmation email/ticket #s, they wouldn't have honoured it.
Anyhow, there are a lot of keeners that are looking into this and I imagine that it will get some press. It would be like our business all of a sudden turning off a clients web site, without notice and waiting for them to find out... call us to complain and then us saying that we wanted more money and that our intial contract wasn't good enough.
It'll be interesting to see what will happen. I am not pleased with Al Italia and I will never fly with them. They'd better do something for us Cyrprus fans.
Here's a link to Flyer Talk where the people "in the know" talk about this situation.

A Deal is a Deal or is it?
1. You have a product.
2. You put it up for sale.
3. Someone agrees to pay your price.
4. You exchange payment information.
5. The vendor gives you confirmation of your purchase.
6. You use the product.
Seems pretty simple and in most situations this would constitute a deal. However with Air Alitalia not so.
Wait and see I suppose...
